Comparison
Paper or digital loyalty card: which to choose?
The paper stamp card has proven itself for decades. The digital version promises to fix its flaws. Here is an honest comparison to decide with full knowledge, based on your business.
The match in 7 criteria
| Criterion | Paper card | Digital card |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Printing the first batch (€30 to €80) | Subscription (€9.99/month with Éclat Loyalty) |
| Cost over time | Reprints at every stockout, ink stamp | Fixed, nothing to buy again |
| Lost or forgotten cards | Very common: the card ends up at the bottom of a bag | Impossible: it lives on the customer's phone |
| Fraud | Cards filled over a weekend, copied stamps | Automatic cooldown between two stamps |
| Checkout speed | Find the card, find the stamp | 2-second scan, customers can scan themselves |
| Customer file | None: you do not know who comes back | Who returns, how often, rewards redeemed |
| Re-engaging customers | Impossible | Automatic notifications (stamp earned, reward) |
What the paper card does very well
Let's be honest: if the paper stamp card is still everywhere, it is because it has real strengths. It requires no technology, everyone understands it in a second, and it works even for customers without a smartphone. The little ritual of the stamp also has a charm many customers enjoy.
For a shop with very little traffic, or an almost exclusively older and low-tech clientele, it remains a defensible choice. In that case the main advice is simple: treat your cards well (rigid paper, clean design) and accept their limits.
Where digital really changes the game
The problem with the paper card is not the principle, it is the medium. A forgotten card brings nobody back. A card lost at 7 stamps out of 10 frustrates the customer at the worst moment. And a card that can be stamped at will ends up costing unearned rewards.
The digital card fixes all three at once: it lives on the phone (which your customers always carry), progress is visible at all times ("only 2 visits before your reward"), and an anti-abuse cooldown is enforced automatically between stamps. Above all, it adds what paper can never offer: a customer file. Knowing who comes back, how often, and being able to notify customers when a reward awaits is the difference between hoping for their return and triggering it.

Is a paper loyalty card really cheaper?
At first yes, but the real cost is elsewhere: regular reprints, lost cards that discourage customers, stamps given without the card, and above all no customer file. A digital card at €9.99 per month pays for itself as soon as one or two customers come back once more.
Will my customers accept going digital?
Signing up takes a single QR code scan, with no app to download. For customers attached to paper, nothing stops you from running both systems during a transition period.
What happens to my current paper cards if I go digital?
You can carry over stamps already earned: when a loyal customer signs up, manually add the number of stamps from their paper card. Nobody loses their progress, and the transition happens naturally over the visits.
